General Hints and Tips
We have a range of material and support available to help you make the most of the services that LLN has to offer.
The Infobase Schools and InfoLeeds sections, accessed via the Staff Only pages of the LLN website www.intra.leedslearning.net also provide useful information to help your administrative and teaching staff find out what is going on within the City Council and Education Leeds. LLN also publish our monthly newsletters and Annual Reports on the Infobase Schools site (you can find a link to LLN on the left side bar of the Infobase site).
If you use a dedicated PC or laptop, you can access your emails without having to log in to the LLN site. If you have Microsoft Office on this computer, you will have access to Microsoft Outlook but will need to buy an Exchange Client Access Licence which costs about £2. You can obtain these from your Network Maintainer e.g. Enterprise on 0113 2787223. If you do not have Microsoft Office, you will need to purchase this via your Network Maintainer.
To save time logging in, you can set up a link to the Outlook Web Access (OWA) site from your desktop. To do this, visit the Staff Only section of the LLN website and click and drag the mailbox icon (top left of the screen) onto your desktop.
AVOIDING SPAM EMAILS
There are some simple steps that you can take to avoid being inundated with Spam. It is vital to AVOID publishing personal staff emails on websites because these can be collected and sold to Spammers. Instead, make sure that you use the generic email addresses provided for your school e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. Tools are also available enabling you to publish personal addresses in a format that people can read but which remain inaccessible to harvesters. To find out about these tools, search for "hide email details websites" on www.google.co.uk.
ACCESSING LLN EMAIL FROM HOME
To access your LLN email quickly from home, add the link to your favourites list https://owa.leedslearning.net/exchange/logon.asp. Please remember that if you are logging on to LLN email from your home computer via your own Internet provider e.g. BT or AOL, you are not going through the filtering provided by the LLN. This means that you can visit websites that are usually restricted by the LLN due to profanities or explicit content. If you are using a public Internet café please ensure you log out of LLN and close the browser windows to prevent the next user accessing your email.
KEEPING UP TO DATE
To ensure that we can update you with the latest information about LLN services, it is vital that you ensure that your school details are kept up to date. To do this, visit the LLN Administration pages in the Staff section of the LLN website. This page enables you to view and update pages containing contact details for staff, as well as providing information about how to block websites and change User details. You can also use this feature to assign particular people to receive generic emails. For example, you can assign a secretary to read and respond to all emails sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. It is also important to ensure that your school details are kept up to date on the Local Interest section of the LLN site under Schools Details.
ACCESSING THE INTERNET
The LLN site is set up to automatically log Users out of the network after 10 minutes of inactivity. This is because you could move away from the workstation without logging out of LLN, meaning pupils or staff could access your account and view unauthorised sites.
f you would like to extend the amount of time available before LLN automatically logs you out of the network, you have two options:
To avoid pupils gaining access to personal staff User accounts, which can happen if you log them in using your account, we recommend that you use Rainbow accounts in class. This also ensures that pupils cannot access inappropriate sites. Your school has been allocated seven rainbow accounts e.g. dfeeRED, dfeeBLUE, each of which is set to the appropriate level of filtering e.g. KS1, KS2, KS3.
LLN are a BECTA accredited ISP which means that we meet the highest standards for email and Internet filtering. However, If you find an offensive URL that you would like to have blocked, please contact the LLN Service Desk on 0113 214420 and we can arrange for the site to be blocked. Or alternately use http://www.intra.leedslearning.net/banurl.
FREE LLN TRAINING
LLN offers FREE training to help Users make the most of the services we provide. This training covers everything from how to change User account details, through to a basic introduction to using the Internet. Training sessions are held every Wednesday after school from 3.30pm to 5.30pm at the South or North-East Leeds CLC?s and are run by Keith Speight, Head of ICT at Rodillian School. You can also arrange for Keigh to run a training session at your school tailored to your specific requirements. For further information and a timetable visit www.drop-in.leedslearning.org or email email@example.com.
We hope that this information sheet helps save you time and enables you to make the most of LLN. If you are having problems with any of these features, please contact the LLN Service Desk on 0113 214420 for further help.

Domain Name Registration (Nominet)
In 2003 the Leeds Learning Network service desk became a Tag Holder with Nominet UK.
This means that as a service to our members, LLN can submit .uk domain name registration requests to Nominet UK directly.
However please note that when registering a .uk domain, you enter into a contract of registration with Nominet UK according to their terms and conditions. Further, this is a separate contract to any you may have with LLN for the provision of Internet services.
Please visit http://www.nominet.org.uk/nominet-terms.html to find out more about Nominet UK domain registration Terms and Conditions before placing an order with LLN.
Thereafter, if you wish to register a .uk domain telephone the LLN service desk on 0113 3368999 .
