Leeds City Wide Campaign Against Racial Harassment
Design
a Poster to Promote Race Equality
Leeds City Council revised and developed a strategy for Racial Harassment in January 2002 to meet the requirements of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. A Leeds City Wide Campaign Against Racial Harassment is being planned by Leeds City Council in partnership with public bodies, businesses, the voluntary sector and community safety partnerships, to publicise the Racial Harassment Strategy.
Racism incidents are on the increase and often involve school-aged pupils. Education Leeds are committed to work in partnership with schools and other agencies to combat all forms of racism.
All schools have recently engaged in reviewing their Race Equality policies, drawing up action plans and sending aggregated returns of racial harassment.
A poster competition would provide an opportunity for pupils of all ages to participate in expressing their vision of Leeds.
Pupils are invited to design a poster which promotes the following aims:
The poster design should be on A3 paper with an inch border for mounting. All entries will receive a certificate for participation and schools will be given the Leeds Racial Harassment Project resource pack.
The Leeds Racial Harassment Project are willing to provide briefing sessions about the poster competition and run workshops on anti-racism.
Prizes will be awarded to the following age categories:
An overall winning prize.
The closing date for the competition is 17 July 2002.
Entries should be sent to:
Leeds Racial Harassment Project

The entries will be displayed at events during the Black History month in October.
The sponsors of the campaign are donating exciting prizes for the winners. The winners will be awarded their prizes at the Race Equality Conference on 12 November 2002. The conference entitled: ‘The Power to Change – Promoting Race Equality in Schools’ is being jointly organised by Education Leeds and the Leeds Racial Harassment Project.
