How to Apply

The Stephen Lawrence Education Award:
Celebrating Racial Equality in Your School

All schools are eligible to enter for the award

To enter, schools are invited to submit a portfolio of policies and action plans to demonstrate thier commitment to promoting race equality and raising achievement.

The submissions will be judged against the following criteria:

  1. A written Equal Opportunities Policy which is clearly displayed and published to pupils, parents, carers staff and governors.

  2. A written Anti-racist and Anti-bullying Policy which is clearly displayed and published to pupils, parents, carers, staff and governors.

  3. An effective approach to monitoring and responding to racist incidents.

  4. The effective monitoring of staff recruitment and development and governor appointments with targets for recruitment from ethnic minority groups.

  5. An effective monitoring process of ethnic minority pupils in relation to academic attainment and exclusions. Targets should be set for improvement.

  6. A written policy on the procedures for pupil admissions, assessments and transfer.

  7. Mandatory anti-racist training for all staff and governors.

  8. A curriculum that positively reflects a culturally diverse society.

  9. A written policy for involving parents, carers and the community in working with and supporting the school.

  10. All policies should be linked to an action plan.
