Services
The Leeds Learning Network provides secure, reliable email and Internet services to schools, the City Council, libraries and other sites across Leeds.
Our new Star Network aims to meet DfES targets of broadband connection for all schools by August 2006 and provides a vast range of additional IT services that can save schools time and money.
Content
Direct access to FREE commercially produced online content, including Actis and Pathe News, without the need for a long list of separate User details. Accessing the Pathe News archives is FREE but normally costs between £50 and £250 for each newsreel viewed.
Video conferencing facilities - helping to increase communication between schools and saving time and money associated with travelling.
- FREE webspace for all schools with Web Wizard
- Creation Tools to help schools produce their own websites and publish them to the Internet.
- Secure access to media-rich educational materials, including movies, interactive sites, graphics and sounds, provided on the National Education Network (NEN).
- Staff and governor access to Education Leeds services, including InfoBase Schools and secure attainment, behaviour and PLASC file transfer via AVCO.
- Secure access to Leeds City Council services, including FAB, Discoverer, SAP and Siebel.
- Security and Protection
High security Internet and email access to protect pupils from unsuitable content. We are a Becta accredited supplier and meet the highest standards for Internet and email filtering and provide filtering appropriate for the pupils' ages.
- Anti hacking - Firewall protection.
- Anti virus - Sophos to the desktop.
- Regular Microsoft update service.
- Spam and anti-virus email protection.
- Logging and monitoring of surfing activity - it is a legal requirement that schools keep records of email and Internet activity in case of legal action against individuals accessing inappropriate sites.
Integration
- Seamless, secure access to City Council systems and services for staff Users.
- Integrated communications network enabling e-commerce and information sharing between schools and the LEA.
Access
- We provide User accounts for all teachers, pupils (from age 8 - year 3 upwards) and governors in Leeds.
- The Star Network will provide all schools with a fast secure Internet connection via via 10mpbs fibre optic cable by August 2006.
- Remote email Internet access from home, libraries and a growing number of sites throughout the City for teachers, pupils and governors.
- Access to the City library and museum websites using the library catalogue.
- Direct access to the City Council's corporate intranet and other computer systems - dramatically reduce administrative and paper costs and enable quick file transfers. Leeds Learning Network is the only service provider to offer this access.
Continuity
- Pupils and teachers can take their email addresses with them when they leave for another school, training centre or college within the LEA.
- Secure, reliable access from libraries, City Learning Centre's, hospitals, study support centres and other sites throughout Leeds.
Support Services
- A single point of contact - the Service Desk - providing information and support for making the most of the Leeds Learning Network.
- FREE training for teachers provided by Keith Speight, Head of ICT at Rodillian school.
- Consultancy service to discuss how your school can use the additional services offered by the Star Network, including video conferencing and Voice over IP telephony.
- Research and development to bring you the latest new technology.
Value for Money
- We are committed to reducing the cost every year, whilst simultaneously increasing the services we provide.
- We liaise with the LEA every year to ensure that you are allocated sufficient grant funding to pay your LLN bill.
- The Star Network provides a range of value-added services that can save your school time and money, including Voice over IP telephony, video conferencing and security camera monitoring.
