Products & Services: National Education Network

The DfES requires that all schools have a broadband Internet connection and a link to the National Education Network (NEN) by August 2006.

It is a condition of the DfES Broadband funding that schools are connected to the NEN and we have achieved this for all schools in Leeds as part of our Star Network rollout. All schools connected to LLN via the Star network will also have access to a high-speed broadband connection to the NEN.

The National Education Network is a secure, private network that connects all schools, colleges, universities and other educational bodies across the UK together. Publishers are also being encouraged to connect to the NEN in order to improve the quality of service received by schools when using their content.

The fact that the NEN is a private network and not the Internet means that fast and reliable access can be guaranteed at all times to a vast range of high-quality digital learning resources.

The NEN will revolutionise teaching and learning by providing the latest technology to facilitate collaboration, resource sharing and greater flexibility within the learning environment.

What Services will be provided on the NEN?

The NEN will provide access to both free and commercial interactive broadband services, requiring high bandwidth capacity, including:

The Pathe News Archive is the first material available free on the NEN and this contains over 3,500 hours of news, sport, social history and entertainment from 1896 to 1970. Oxford University Press were one of the first publishers to have a direct connection.

The NEN will also be a route for the provision of national learning resources. BBC Digital Curriculum resources will be available on the NEN during 2005. This will include fully digital interactive learning resources designed to meet the needs of the 21st century classroom. These will be based on the current curricula for 5-16 year olds and will include multi-media resources combining video/animation extracts, virtual journeys and on-screen text. The CPD resources from Teachers? TV will also be available through this route.

The NEN will facilitate flexible and enjoyable learning for pupils, students and teachers alike. We will update you with further information about the NEN and its resources as this becomes available.
