3) Web Publishing and File Storage

Click here for information regarding web publishing and file storage and the migration.

Leeds Learning Network Migration Important Announcement 1

The migration of Leeds Learning Network services from BT to our new provider Synetrix will take place in three phases during May 2006 and is expected to be completed before schools return from Whitsun half term holidays. The migration has been carefully planned around the following key factors:

  1. Absolute minimal disruption to school and library Internet access during normal working hours
  2. No changes required on user workstations or servers
  3. User names and passwords remain the same
  4. User emails are not lost
  5. Users have the same Internet filtering protection and privileges as before
  • Users personal files stored in their personal FTP file space will not be migrated to the new service. Users wishing to save a copy of their online files can either recover them online before the migration, or request them on a CD from Leeds Learning Network service desk after the migration has taken place. Personal FTP file space will be replaced with improved online file storage facilities in the Learning Platform later in the summer term.
  • Also WWW website publishing will be simplified from the current upload to intermediate staging server; authorisation and publishing processes to a single step upload with immediate publishing.

The migration will be implemented in three phases. We appreciate your support and cooperation during this period.

1 Preparation starts on Friday 5th May

The majority of activity will be “behind-the-scenes”. However a full user account freeze will take place from this date until the migration is fully completed. Once we start the migration process it is essential user account data remains the same in both old and new services.

User account freeze entails the following:

  • No password changes
  • No new users created (we will be able to provide temporary accounts in emergencies)
  • No user details changes such as name or user site location changes

2 Filtered Internet Migration

During late May batches of sites will be cutover to the new Internet service, out of hours each evening. You will be informed of the date for your site cutover nearer the time. You will not have to change anything, when you login the next day simply type in your usual user name and password into the corresponding fields in the new look login screen.

3 Email Migration

Intended to take place over Whitsun weekend and subsequent two days bank holiday to ensure all 120,000 users emails are transferred to the new service. Inbound emails received from outside Leeds Learning Network during the email migration period will be captured, saved offsite in a secure server and automatically put into your new mail system inbox. We hope that given the period is a bank holiday this will not inconvenience the vast majority of email users. Once the migration is completed all users, staff and pupils will enjoy the benefits of using the same Microsoft Exchange 2003 email system.

Subsequent announcements will confirm the exact dates and times of filtered Internet and email migrations for your site.

We thank you for your cooperation and support during this busy, but exciting period. If you do encounter any unexpected issues or have any concerns or queries about the migration please call the Leeds Learning Network service desk on 0113 3368999 or email servicedesk@leedslearning.net
